Idaho Dairy Families Partner with Kristin Armstrong, Olympic Gold Medalist, World Champion Cyclist, and Idaho Native

Kristin Armstrong

United Dairymen of Idaho (UDI), on behalf of Idaho's dairy farm families, has partnered with Idaho native, Kristin Armstrong, who won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a member of the U.S.A. Cycling Olympic Team. Armstrong is working with UDI to promote better eating habits and physical activity. UDI's partnership with Armstrong was forged because she understands how good nutrition and exercise are key factors in a healthy lifestyle.

As a world-class athlete, Armstrong values the role that nutrient rich foods and exercise play in helping to keep her body strong. According to Armstrong, "Chocolate milk is my secret weapon! The protein helps me maintain healthy muscles and the carbohydrates help refuel my muscles after I exercise. This, combined with milk’s vitamins and minerals, is important for my overall health." Milk, flavored or plain, provides carbohydrates for energy to help recovery after endurance exercise. Milk also provides calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B12, niacin and potassium -- it's also 90% water, which helps replace fluids and rehydrate the body.

Kristin Armstrong Gold Medalist

"We commend Kristin's commitment to good nutrition and physical activity," said Deana Sessions, Administrator for United Dairymen of Idaho. "Idaho’s dairy farm families are proud to partner with Kristin," Sessions continued, "She is a great role model for people to follow when it comes to healthy eating and keeping fit."

Chocolate milk provides important nutrients in a convenient great-tasting, relatively inexpensive package. According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid recommendations, Americans of all activity levels should include 3 servings of low-fat or fat-free milk or milk products in their diet every day. Chocolate milk provides another option for meeting these recommendations.

Dairy foods have many health benefits other than helping to build and maintain strong bones. Research shows that including dairy products in your diet may help control blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Dairy has always been a part of a healthy diet, and yet most Americans still do not get enough. The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee now recommends Americans include at least 3 servings of dairy in their diet each day to ensure adequate consumption if important nutrients such as vitamin A, magnesium and potassium.
